About - The Ursa Major Fund supports the independent, self-organized work of artists, small groups and collaborators across Alaska’s cultural ecosystem. Ursa Major provides ten grants of $6000 for artist-led, risk-taking, public-facing projects that inspire curiosity, engagement, dialogue and respect for cultural integrity.

Projects should begin from a visual arts impulse (interpreted generously and with wide latitude). In other words, the program is designed to help artists enact their creative visions, not necessarily to accomplish social, political, cultural, or other goals.

Applications are open to artists who call Alaska home for projects that primarily occur in Alaska. Please visit UrsaMajor.Fund for more eligibility information.

Applications are accepted from September 1 to October 15 each year. Project awardees are notified by December 31st. Projects occur during the following year (the project period) with a simple report due at the end.

Applications are selected based on (1) artistic merit of the proposed project, (2) engagement with community and audience, and (3) feasibility and relevance to the artist's development. Additionally, the jury panel will seek to make awards across a wide range of communities, disciplines and geographies.
